Welcome New Floridians
This site started on the Tenth Anniversary of our moving to Florida. Ten years came and went pretty quickly. We have learned a lot in those years and have made some mistakes along the way. Our goal is to try to help new Florida residents, and those thinking about relocating here, profit from our experience.
The articles are set up with a variety of categories, so you can look for whatever interests you. We are open to suggestions to improve the site and will try to answer any questions asked.

Almost the end of the day
The sun has set, the water is calm, the day is just about gone. If you look at this photo long enough, you can almost smell the water. FOG sez: I can hear the ice cubes in the shaker; its martini time! ...
read moreWhoooo’s that in our yard?
One evening, we were sitting in the lanai and heard the hoot of a great horned owl. Pretty cool, but not all that unusual. We heard a second hoot, coming from a different tree, and then, a third from still another tree. There were three owls around our yard! They...

Mother nature used her red and orange crayons on this sunset. This view is looking west down our street.
read moreSandhill Cranes
This family of sandhill cranes came into the yard and the father went to the bird feeder and literally emptied it in a few minutes. He pulled out as much seed as he could so the others could eat. How could we be upset when dad was providing for his family? Just a note...
read moreOne Froggy Night
Two or three years after we moved to Florida, we discovered we had a Cuban tree frog living on the top of our entry rainspout. These frogs are an invasive species and the University of Florida’s extension service recommends killing them. I didn’t have the heart to do...
read moreSky on Fire
Here is another example of the clouds becoming more intensely colored after the sun goes below the horizon. Keep that in mind the next time you go somewhere to watch the sunset. Don’t be in a rush to leave as soon as the ball of the sun disappears.
read moreCardinal
One of the first things we noticed about Florida cardinals is the size; they are smaller than the ones in Pennsylvania. The same thing holds true for many other birds and animals. I asked some experts about this and was told since they do not need the extra layer of...
read moreWood Stork
OK, so perhaps not the most beautiful bird in Florida. On land, they are pretty ugly. In the sky, they are beauty to behold. They grow to over three feet in height and have a wingspan of over five feet. The wood stork is the only stork breeding in the United States....

Another great sky looking west from our backyard.

I was doing a little fishing one evening as the sun was setting. The fishing was great, the catching, not so great. Mrs. FOG, as usual, had her camera with her and took this photo of me. We both liked it. When one of our sons visited us, he remarked,...
read moreSunset down our street
As we returned home from shopping the setting sun reflected beautiful light against the heavy clouds. Often, the most spectacular colors appear after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
read moreWho’s That Knocking At My Door?
I love living in my house. Today, we were working in our little home office and we heard a strange knock at the front door. The door has cut glass windows; I could see that there was no one standing outside. I started to walk away and the knock came again. So, I went...
