One of the first things we noticed about Florida cardinals is the size; they are smaller than the ones in Pennsylvania. The same thing holds true for many other birds and animals. I asked some experts about this and was told since they do not need the extra layer of fat to survive the winter, the Florida fauna are leaner than their northern cousins.

This cardinal was eating at our backyard feeder.
